Occupy your heart. With love. Occupy your mind. With truth. Occupy your streets. With conscience and courage. Beware of arrogance. (The "New Left" got old fast). Beware of naivety. (You have almost nothing in common with "Tea-baggers" or Libertarians.) Beware of resentment. (Do not scorn the broader progressive movement. You could be the tip of the spearhead, but there is no spear without a shaft.) Beware of bitterness. (Winter is descending. Spring may lead elsewhere. Mandela spent 27 years in prison, and yet he still emerged a peacemaker.) Words of Power
Well, not quite everything, reports staff writerJoseph Rose. Turns out the agency's budget for public art won't get the axe. And, Rose reports, the agency's tough times didn't keep administrators from hiring "four executive and manager positions, totaling $495,000 in annual salaries." TriMet also plans to hire a spokesperson -- a post that comes with a $60,000 salary -- to fill a recent vacancy. Meanwhile, riders can almost count on fare increases and service reductions.
“We maintain that the people of Boring meet all of the (lawful) requirements,” he said, “and the TriMet board, by law, must grant withdrawal. Testimony at the hearing will add further proof.” “The governor of the state of Oregon has failed to ensure the residents of Clackamas County, and particularly Boring, their rights to representative government afforded by the Oregon State Constitution,” Bates said. Story here!
"To the bus driver he said, 'We just wanted to let you know that we are not going to pay the fare. It costs too much to ride the bus,'" she said. "I was pretty upset about it."
Greg, an immigrant worker, spoke about his experience as a bus driver for Tri-Met. “The present contract expired at the end of ’09 and the services we provided were contracted out to First Transit, which is a huge transit company. First Transit took over our yard and promptly tried to sack 43 people. What dominates is a confrontational approach which is taught to all managers. We work for a hostile company.”
On the Occupy movement he said, “You put the seed in my head that it is the origin of something bigger. Personally, I would wish a more confrontational approach. If you look at the various movements over the decades, they have been repressed, crushed or co-opted. Obama has put the criminals in charge. You guys have to change the political parties here.”
Equity advocates must demand wiser investment of transportation dollars. Policymakers must reduce the burden on millions of struggling families who rely on public transit that is available and affordable. Without urgent attention, this lack of transportation will continue to be a proxy for leaving whole communities out of the American mainstream.
