Reliable sources have informed me that 5 trains have been cancelled due to lack of operators!

Trimet general manager says "I know you have tough jobs"

There are at least two meanings to that familiar saying. On the one hand, it’s a rule contest organizers use to keep people in the room during an event. On a more philosophical note, it’s a reminder that good things happen in life when we “show up” and give it our best shot. In the case of the summer attendance campaign we launched this week, both meanings apply. For the next three months, the Operations Division is offering extra incentives to reward good attendance. You’ll find the details of this campaign on TriNET. What I want to emphasize is the very real value of good attendance. If we’re scrambling to find people and vehicles to put out there, we run the risk of letting down our customers. And especially in the summer when a lot of employees take their hard-earned scheduled vacations – unexpected absences put a real strain on both the budget and morale. Now, I know you have tough jobs – and that in many cases you’re working long hours – and that things happen to us and our families. But I also know we can do better on the attendance front. Our attendance is below our goal – and down from last year in many work groups. I’m hoping many of you will rise to the occasion to keep our buses and trains on schedule and doing what you can to support our customers and your fellow coworkers. And this summer – there might even be a prize in it for you. Thanks for all your hard work! Neil

Chinatown bus operator attempts to evade USDOT ban by changing names

And a big problem with unsafe operations is that in many cases, customers don't have any way to determine whether an operation is safe. Customers can easily compare different lines' fares and fare policies, schedules, and amenities; but customers generally cannot tell when a driver has been running too long, or is improperly trained, or a vehicle isn't well-maintained--until its too late. And as this example shows, companies with poor safety practices that become public (or attract regulatory scrutiny) can often become reborn, simply with a website redesign and a new coat of paint.

Comments to the TriMet Board Regarding Proposed TriMet Fare Increase

John Charles

TriMet Unfair proposed Fair Increase

Fact: TriMet is using the ADA as an excuse to overly penalize/pricing people with disabilities off of due needed paratransit service. TriMet blaming the huge increase because of service delivery cost and yet not imposing a huge increase to WES riders, why?

Who's who updated

Erik H. said...

What amazes me is that there is one "Director" for Commuter Rail...and one "Director" for bus operations.

Let's see...

One highly paid "Director" to oversee a transit operation that only operates seven hours a day, five days a week, with three vehicles in service and 1,500 riders per day.

One highly paid "Director" to oversee a transit operation that has over 600 vehicles in service, 20 hours per day, seven days a week, with nearly a million riders per day.

And it's any wonder why people are pissed off at how TriMet treats bus riders. TriMet deserves to have about 20 "Directors" to oversee the bus operation, each of them fully responsible for their assigned bus routes, AND empowered to make operational changes - even immediately - to improve service to the rider.
